Most Agra trips are a same-day Taj dash from Delhi — and they miss the best of the city. Here's a relaxed 2-day plan.
Day 1 — the classics, done right
6:00 AM — Taj Mahal at sunrise. The gates open early and this is the only hour with soft light and thin crowds. Buy tickets online the night before; foreigner/Indian lines are separate.
10:00 AM — Agra Fort. The red-sandstone Mughal capital — 2 hours minimum. Don't miss Musamman Burj, where Shah Jahan was imprisoned, staring at the Taj.
4:00 PM — Mehtab Bagh. The riverfront garden directly across the Yamuna — the classic "Taj across the water" shot, best in golden hour.
Day 2 — Fatehpur Sikri & the local side
8:00 AM — Fatehpur Sikri (40 km, 1 hour). Akbar's abandoned capital — Buland Darwaza will genuinely take your breath away. Half a day.
4:00 PM — Kinari Bazaar + petha shopping. Agra's old bazaar lanes and the famous sweet (try the Angoori petha).

- Fridays: Taj is closed — plan around it
- Shoe covers come with your Taj ticket — don't buy from touts outside
- Guides at monuments are government-licensed — insist on the badge, or skip
