Route & the trek — what to expect
The drive ends at Gaurikund (16 km trek to the temple). The trek takes 5–7 hours up, 3–4 hours down. Options on the trail: ponies (₹2,500–₹3,500), palki/doli (₹4,000+), and helicopter services from Phata/Guptkashi (book weeks ahead on the official portal).
Where to stay — the decision that matters most
- Kedarnath (top): closest to the temple, basic rooms and tents, cold even in May. Best if you want early-morning darshan without rushing. Book 3–6 weeks ahead.
- Gaurikund: at the trek start — hot springs, better rooms, easier logistics for families.
- Guptkashi / Phata / Sitapur: the comfortable base — proper hotels, parking, and you drive to the trek each morning. Best for most travellers, especially with kids or elders.

Registration & best time
Yatra registration is mandatory (official portal / app) — carry a printout. The temple opens late April to Bhai Dooj (Nov). Best windows: May (pre-monsoon) and September (post-monsoon). Avoid July–August — landslides and heavy rain are real risks.
Tips that make a difference
- Start the trek by 4–5 AM — you'll reach by noon with time to rest before darshan queues
- Carry cash — network and ATMs are unreliable beyond Guptkashi
- Pack layers: mornings near 0°C even in May; rain shell regardless of season
- Diamox (consult your doctor) if you're prone to altitude issues — Kedarnath sits at 3,583 m
